The architects from Auer Weber tasked with the construction of an extension to the district court building in Freiburg took historical elements and gave them a modern twist. At the same time, they sought out simple solutions for the new building which would not only make things more comfortable for its users but also ensure that any future refurbishment projects would be straightforward.

They selected a facade system combining insulation layer and back ventilation in a way that would perfectly meet the building physical targets set for thermal protection in summer and winter. The facade construction also delivered excellent moisture management, ensuring that the render surfaces would remain intact and look great for many years to come.

The back ventilation joints are traditionally located in the plinth area and at the top behind the parapet covering. To enhance the monolithic, solid character of the facade, the plinth was formed flush with the ventilated facade rather than with a recess. This makes the joint look like a dividing line between the facade and the plinth. The architects were also keen to ensure that the individual building parts could be recycled in the event of demolition.
