ABG 'freshens up Frankfurt'
It is undisputed that greenery on the roof or facade of a building has a cooling effect. It contributes to a more pleasant microclimate, especially in the warm summer months. Plants also clean the air of dust and other particulates, whilst producing oxygen. Last but not least, a green, blooming residential quarter delights its residents.
With the 'Frankfurt frischt auf' funding programme, the City of Frankfurt wants to encourage private house and property owners, companies and housing associations to equip their properties accordingly for climate change. ABG FRANKFURT HOLDING has taken up the challenge: In the course of the energetic retrofit of its existing buildings in Mainzer Landstraße, the housing association has greened the gable sides of each of four building blocks.
Among other things, morning glory and climbing roses were planted - their tendrils, unlike ivy or wild vines, require a climbing aid. This is where StoFix Iso-Bar ECO was required. The plants have to be watered for approximately their first three years before their roots are strong enough to take care of themselves. It is the first instance of ABG establishing ground-based greening. Further facade greening is to follow.
With a portfolio size of 54,000 apartments and a total of 2m square metres of outdoor facilities, the company has a significant opportunity to positively influence the climate in its neighborhoods: 80,000 square meters of roof area are already greened. This allows the temperature on a roof surface to be reduced from 70 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius in summer. In addition, there are a total of 22,000 trees that stand on the company's own properties. Every year, an average of up to 300 native species are replanted that are better able to cope with climate change.
